Financing the fight against climate change and redirecting financial flows is a huge and complex challenge. Economic, financial and public actors can channel capital to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. They must be able to rely on high quality research in finance to explore the consequences of financial choices, test innovative tools, and develop concrete solutions. Finance for Tomorrow puts research at the heart of its activity, which is to make green and sustainable finance the key driving force of the development and attractiveness of the Paris Financial Center. The Louis Bachelier Institute has initiated a “Transverse Research Program in Green and Sustainable Finance”, whose objective is to stimulate researchers, pool research efforts, increase financial and to broaden the audience of these works.
This map aims to provide a better identification of institutions and projects, but also to shed light on main issues and their solutions. By promoting these activities, Finance for Tomorrow and the Louis Bachelier Institute seek to increase opportunities for collaboration between professionals and researchers. It is essential that their links be strengthened, so that companies can identify work able to meet their needs and can get involved in the development of research projects.
To carry out the mapping, Finance for Tomorrow and the Louis Bachelier Institute carried out a study to identify institutions, researchers and their research subjects. This study was completed by the experts from the Research groups of Finance for Tomorrow and FIR. Once the actors have been identified, their activities have been divided according to 10 major research themes: Climate, Biodiversity, Energy, Mobility, Carbon, Social and Solidarity Economy, Corporate Social Responsibility, Financial Ethics, Socially Responsible Investment, Development. At this stage, more than 150 institutions have been identified, divided into four categories of actors: “Academic”, “Public Institutions”, “NGOs, Think-Tanks, Networks”, & “Private Sector”. Based on this work, the mapping was designed in the form of a datavisualization that links to a directory of institutions, to provide readability on the ecosystem while allowing access to more information.
This map is a digital and collaborative tool: everyone can propose modifications or contributions to complete it. All stakeholders can thus participate in the development of Research in Green and Sustainable Finance in France and join a dynamic ecosystem, able to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s finance.
